Estimados amigos y colegas españoles,
Es con gran alegría que le envío mis profundas felicitaciones, desde Portugal, por la victoria en la copa del mundo. Fue brillante.
¡están de felicitaciones!
Abrazos,

The Spanish Dental Association, in its General Assembly, marked the Oral Cancer European day. Last 11th June I was in Santiago Compostela with our colleagues from Spain where we approach some of the aspects concerning oral cancer: prevention and treatments.
Last 2 June, in Lisbon, the Presidents of the four Portuguese Health Professional Regulators (Dentists, Physicians, Pharmacists and Nurses) made a joint organization of a Conference dedicated to the subject «Patient safety versus system’s sustainability». The Health Minister was present at the conference opening.

Patient Safety was one of the important issues approached. I stated that one of the prerequisites for «Patient Safety» is the notion of quality at the service of patient safety. There has been a «simplification» of the definition of quality in Health, focused exclusively in the outcomes and neglecting the «structures and processes».
Patient expectations and behaviours are very important aspects that should be taken into account. Healthcare should be centred on the patients and the strengthening of this empowering is a key aspect in a modern health system. Read the rest of this entry »
Last May was fruitful in Congresses and Conferences, in Porto. It is with happiness that I am seeing oral health issues growing up at the national agenda. Oral healthcare Scientific Societies and/or Associations have been expanding in Portugal, giving us great contributions in specific areas.
Hereby, I would like to detach the 2nd Congress of Hospital Dentistry, organised by the Portuguese Hospital Dental Medicine and the 1st Iberian Paediatric Dentistry Meeting, co-organised by the Portuguese Society of Paediatric Dentistry and by the Spanish Society of Paediatric Dentistry, that was distinguished with the presence of the Secretary of Health, Dr. Manuel Pizarro.

In 2005, FDI joined WHPA – World Health Professions Alliance. Since then, both organization’s contribute have been productive on key oral health care issues.
Last May, WHPA celebrate its 10th anniversary in Geneva. I had the opportunity to participate at its leadership forum, under the theme: Collaborating for change.
I had the pleasure to make a few remarks in a small session of speeches. As special guest, we figured on with the presence of the Brazilian Health Minister.
The City of Yerevan, Armenia was the stage for the election of the new ERO President-elect and board members. The elections took place during the ERO plenary session (29-30 April 2010).
I am sure that the new ERO board members will do a great work within the FDI and will continuing approach and involve all European colleagues for a professional growth. Only together, we could offer a better oral health for our patients.
Congratulations to my colleagues for the election:
Philippe Rusca – President-Elect
Anna Lella – Secretary General/Treasurer
Michael Frank – Councilor
Bedros Yavru-Sakuk – Councilor
My best wishes to all of them! As always, I am at disposal for collaboration in any convenient issue.
The Scientific part of the ERO plenary session was under the theme: “A Global Medical Approach in the Service of the Profession”.
The next ERO plenary session will be held in Brazil during the 2010 FDI AWDC.
The last FDI Mid Year Council Meeting was remarkable for the volcanic ash cloud that paralyzed air travel in Europe! The agenda was adjusted because most of the FDI councillors couldn’t arrive in time to Geneva. I was one of them!
Every cloud has a silver lining… and once together in Geneva we run out all the topics appointed at the agenda. My accomplishments to all FDI staff for the great reorganisation of the works.
For the second time I was present at the Chicago Midwinter Meeting. It was impossible not to go back. The excellent organisation and the importance of the meetings and contacts established, make this meeting a great success. The CDS Midwinter Meeting is one of the largest exhibits of dental products in North America, providing the international dental community with the updated information we need to better serve our patients.

Portuguese Dentists helped in identifying victims
A Flood chaos of destruction and victims devastated the Portuguese Island of Madeira, last February 20. It was noticed in several international media, as you may already have read somewhere.
42 people have been killed in the rainstorm on the Portuguese island.
Search teams looked for victims amid debris, after mud and rock swept through Madeira. Because that, it was very difficult the recognition of some of the victims.
