Thank You ADA!

October 28, 2014

Honoured with ADA’s tribute I cannot give away the present moment without a feedback to my friends and colleague’s followers of my blog through these last few years.

The ADA 2014 – America’s Dental Meeting took place in San Antonio, Texas, from 9th till 14th October.

Elected Honorary Member of the ADA!

July 10, 2014

A few days ago, I received the most pleasant surprise:

ada-letter

Charles H. Norman III, ADA President wrote to me on behalf of the ADA Board of Trustees informing me of my election to the Honorary membership in the American Dental Association!

…”The honor is conferred by the Board of Trustees on those individuals who made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the art and science of dentistry”….

This honorary Membership is a tremendous joy for me.

The ADA and its efforts in promoting oral health in the United States and at global level have always been a source of inspiration for me.

I remember very well in the beginning of the past decade, applying for ADA Affiliate membership. Besides being part of the ADA organization, the possibility of accessing the most valuable information in terms of oral health promotion was of tremendous importance for me not only as a dentist in the private practice, but also for the professional organizations in which I was involved.

The ADA, being on the frontline of the defence of dentists and the profession in the US, constituted many times a source of inspiration to launch similar battles in Portugal , at an European Union level and later on at an FDI level.

I could never have imagined at the time, that one day I would be distinguished with such an honour!

This election by the ADA, one of the biggest, oldest and most respected professional organizations of the world is an enormous incentive to continue the fight to help promoting access of the populations to oral health!

My sincere thanks to the ADA! I’m looking forward to seing you all at the ADA 2014 Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, 9-14 October

AOHAB is a nonprofit, international nongovernmental organization created by oral health care professionals and oral health advocates — dentists, dental educators, members of the oral health care team, business leaders, researchers, public servants, administrators, advocates and others — representing dozens of nationalities with the vision of achieving global peace and health through oral health by means of collaborative dialogue and action.

ny1

The overall guiding principle of AOHAB is based on ethical behaviour and impartiality, respecting all racial, ethnic, religious, political, gender, and age characteristics of people everywhere. AOHAB is dedicated to the spirit of humanitarianism, having genuine concern for the lives of others and their improvement, and fostering mutual understanding and respect for the human right to health, including oral health, for all.

Within this context, members of AOHAB view oral health as an integral part of general health, with many of the risk factors shared with diseases affecting other body systems. The projects to be

Thanksgiving New York!

November 30, 2011

For the occasion of the 87th Annual Session of the Greater New York Dental Meeting, having been kindly invited by its general chairman, Dr. John Halikias and its executive director, Dr. Robert Edwab, I had the pleasure to attend this meeting on behalf of FDI.

The day after my arrival, the 24th November, I had the opportunity to watch the traditional Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It was three-hours of an interesting view and a different feel of the Big Apple just before heading towards a full agenda!

The 2nd Annual FOLA (Latin America) Global Leadership Programme organization invited me to attend their breakfast/meeting.

Guests were invited for a breakfast on 28th November.

And welcomed by Steve Kess, Henry Schein Inc., vice president.

I had the opportunity to meet the president of the Hispanic Dental Association, Margo Melchor, an organization focused on addressing the representation of Hispanic colleagues in the United States.

The Greater NY Dental Meeting included this year 18,311 dentists. It was also a good occasion to promote our FDI AWDC 2012.

The “Celebrity Luncheon” was also an important moment where I took the chance to strengthen relations with several presidents of dental associations and with deans of dental schools.

With George Stephanopoulos, who was an senior adviser in the Clinton administration, was the celebrity speaker.

Orlando Monteiro da Silva and George Stephanopoulos

With Gorki Espinoza, president of the Ecuador Dental Association.

The International Dental Tribune organized the first Dental Tribune Global Awards where I had the pleasure to see some good friends and qualified colleagues being recognized for their efforts in oral health.

FDI at American Dental Association Annual Session Las Vegas

October 19, 2011

One say, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…. But I’ll open an exception regarding the ADA Annual Session.

It was a great pleasure for me to accept ADA kind invitation to attend it’s Congress on behalf of FDI.

The problems of the profession are similar, at different scales, all over the world. And the answers are very often also global. FDI has a main role, as “leading the oral to optimal oral health”.

Oral Health included in the United Nations Non Communicable Diseases global strategy

September 21, 2011

Great achievement for FDI-World Dental Federation and all those who advocated for that approach.

Political Declaration from the High Level Meeting adopted by the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases:

We, Heads of State and Government and representatives of States and Governments, assembled at the United Nations from 19 to 20 September 2011 to address the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases worldwide, with a particular focus on developmental and other challenges and social and economic impacts, particularly for developing countries.

The United Nations “recognize that renal, ORAL and eye diseases pose a major health burden for many countries and that these diseases share common risk factors and can benefit from common responses to NCDs”.

Facing the facts (source FDI):

  • Oral diseases are the most common noncommunicable diseases
  • Some 90% of the world’s population is affected by tooth decay
  • A high proportion suffer from periodontal disease
  • Oral cancer rate high among smokers

Non-communicable Diseases: Millions of deaths can be prevented

June 20, 2011

Last Thursday, June 16th, in New York, at the United Nations, a very important hearing regarding the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases took place.

The UN headquarters in New York

The UN headquarters in New York

This interactive hearing, organized by the President of the General Assembly, Mr. Joseph Deiss, involved non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, the private sector and academia. All Member States were invited, too. FDI was there taking a strong position on this issue, once more without losing the opportunity to identify steps for a future action plan.

Jean-Luc Eiselé spoke on behalf of WHPA, too.

Jean-Luc Eiselé spoke on behalf of WHPA

Jean-Luc Eiselé spoke on behalf of WHPA

Non-communicable diseases:  cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic lung diseases and diabetes – kill three in five people worldwide. We could ask why there are no more negotiations and outcomes to prevent this kind of diseases worldwide. Maybe because its own name doesn’t help. Regarding this opinion, I underline the report of HRH Princess Dina Mired (Jordan) at the opening session: diseases denominated non-communicable are undervalued in its impact on public opinion. It’s like if they are not communicable there is no need to communicate it or release it, so it’s not important. We have the idea that only what is communicable it’s important, so we have here an elementary problem in drawing attention. And more than ever, social mobilization efforts are needed.

Princess Dina Mired (Jordan) at the opening session

Princess Dina Mired (Jordan) at the opening session

I am deeply concerned with the outcomes of this hearing, which will form the basis for the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly, next September, where I also hope to be present. Our purpose should be to join several opinion makers in order to bring more inputs to this discussion and create a strong circle for a strong call of attention.

Me, Marion Bergman (Miracle Corners of the World) and Roberto Vianna

Me, Marion Bergman (Miracle Corners of the World) and Roberto Vianna

It’s our duty, as FDI members, to be aware and to make each government aware of the problem of non-communicable diseases and recommend specific actions for each one. What is being done, and what can be done. How can we communicate what seems to be non-communicable! It will be a marathon to reduce the impact and deaths caused by non-communicable diseases, but a solid start began in NY. And I was there.
