6th Moscow International Dental Exhibition MosExpoDental

By mutual invitation of the CEO of the 6th Moscow International Dental Exhibition MosExpoDental, Lina Vartanyan, and the president of Russian Dental Association, Vladimir Sadovski, I have been in Moscow last November.

Meeting of the FDI-ERO Working Group Integration, which I had the honor to open. Participants focused in particular on the Europe-wide standardization of several aspects of the profession as well as local approaches to pan-European issues, such as recognition of diplomas – with a view to increasing the professional mobility of dentists – oral health policy and academic training.

In the frames of the meeting, took place an exchange of view from presidents from Eastern European countries. Most of them, Russian speaking language, such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and also Ukrania, Armenia and Georgia.

I had the opportunity, as lecturer invited to the ongoing parallel congress “Innovations in Dentistry”, to deliver a presentation about FDI Vision 2020 – challenges of National Dental Associations.

FDI African Strategy for Africa – Capetown

30 delegates converged on Cape Town, South Africa, 30 and 31 October, to hammer out principles and action for future FDI undertakings on the African continent.

They included presidents and representatives from 16 national dental associations, a government official, a delegate from the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as FDI council and committee members and staff.

The aim was to listen, learn and agree on a common strategy to build capacity, reinforce credibility and enhance the operational effectiveness of African national dental associations.

Commitment

African Summit on Oral Health (30 to 31 October 2012): Declaration

FDI World Dental Federation and 16 Presidents and representatives of its member National Dental Associations (NDAs) at the African Summit on Oral Health in Cape Town on 30 and 31 October 2012:

within the context of the overarching vision of ‘Leading the World to Optimal Oral Health’;
mindful of the crucial role of oral health in general health; and
alarmed by the omission of oral health from the ongoing discussions on WHO draft global work plan 2014-2019

FDI and NDAs commit to:

improving efficiency in order to reinforce credibility as national strategic advisor in the field of public oral health policy making;
enhancing leadership and management skills;
reinforcing inter-NDA communication and information exchange.

In support of these commitments, FDI and its NDAs will:

develop and facilitate training to enhance NDA skills in strategic planning, leadership, negotiation, governance, marketing and communications and project management;
advocate actively for oral health in the African continent;
develop a framework with WHO for data collection and dissemination;
implement and promote this strategic plan for African NDAs.

It Was Much More Than A Congress…

The 20th Annual Congress of the Portuguese Dental Association was held last 10, 11 and 12 November, in Lisbon. With renowned national and international speakers, with a great organization committee and with a professional and dedicated team we had done a memorable celebration of the twentieth PDA congress.

The doors opened at 9 am to receive 5745 visitants and delegates.

I had the honor to have the presence of several delegations from other dental associations and countries worldwide. Angola; Brazilian Dental Association (ABO, ABCD and APCD); Bulgarian Dental Association; Cape Verde Dental Association; Guinea Bissau Dental Association; Iranian Dental Association and from the Greater New York Dental Meeting. The Executive Director of FDI, the Vice-President of the Council of European Dentists and representatives from IADS were present as well.

Friday was the day of the Opening Ceremony with the presence of the Health Secretary of State, Dr. Fernando Leal da Costa.

It was announced important news for Oral Health, such as the enlargement of the Oral Health Program, by the Secretary of State and by my side the strategy to implement the new Nomenclature Table of PDA.

There was time to promote a meeting between IADS and Portuguese Dental Students Associations. My eyes are always looking to students and young dentists from long time ago, it’s an old concern. Portugal hasn’t delegates at IADS and the aim of that meeting was to promote further developments between all of them.

8 pm. The doors were closed! But one will to return every year make of PDA congress much more than a congress… A congress where science, continuing education, dental marketing, dentistry trade, dental policies and friendship join together in a perfect 3 days… to do more than a congress!

More than a Congress…

Hechas en Uruguay

After half an hour overflying Montevideo, waiting for landing conditions caused by the volcanic ashes cloud prevenient from Chile’s Puyehue-Cordon-Caulle volcano, about 800km (500 miles) south of Santiago de Chile, that began erupting, I landed on the 16th night at Carrasco Airport.

Dr. Alvaro Roda, president of Uruguayan Dental Association (la Asociación Odontológica Uruguaya, AOU) was waiting for me.

The day after I visited the pre-congress courses of the XIV CIO and 65th anniversary of the AOU.

This same afternoonm, the 17th, me and Alvaro Roda had a meeting with Dr. Jorge Venegas, Public Health minister of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. We had a chance to present FDI and some of its projects. We discussed national health policies, too. The Health Minister will also attend the World Conference on Social Determinants to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 19-21 October. Once there, he will be chairing one panel “Making Policy Coherent at the National Level”, of the programme’s conference.

The next day, the 18th, me and Alvaro Roda had a meeting with Dr. Diego Cánepa Baccino, Prosecretario of the President of Republic Oriental Uruguay. Thought, another important political decision maker was informed about FDI and the profession proposals in Uruguay.

On the afternoon, we had a long meeting with the director of Social Development, Health Department of the Intendencia de Montevideo, Pablo Anzalone.

The oral health program in the Montevideo area and FDI approach was the center of the discussions. Finally, I had the enormous honor of being declared by the mayor of Montevideo Municipality, Intendencia de Montevideo, Ana Olivera honorable guest

And also honorable member of the Uruguayan Dental Association (socio honorario de la Asociación Odontológica Uruguaya), on their General Assembly of the 30th March, by unanimous decision. Great Honour for me and FDI!

FDI at American Dental Association Annual Session Las Vegas

One say, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…. But I’ll open an exception regarding the ADA Annual Session.

It was a great pleasure for me to accept ADA kind invitation to attend it’s Congress on behalf of FDI.

The problems of the profession are similar, at different scales, all over the world.And the answers are very often also global. FDI has a main role, as “leading the oral to optimal oral health”.

New York University: Putting Teeth into NCDs

The United Nations held a High Level Meeting on Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases, in New York (19-20 September 2011).

The Government of Tanzania organized a side event entitled “Putting Teeth into NCDs,” on September 19, 2011 at the New York University College of Dentistry.

The event was sponsored by the United Republic of Tanzania, with support of the World Health Organization, and co-sponsored by the Governments of Australia and Sweden.

The program was emceed by Ali Velshi, CNN Anchor and Chief Business Correspondent, and focused on critical issues related to the global burden of oral disease and integrating oral disease into primary health care.

Entrevista à RTP Informação

Ontem comentei o setor da saúde, em particular a saúde oral, num bloco informativo da RTP Informação.

Destaquei a necessidade de regulação dos seguros de saúde e a importância do Governo continuar a apostar no Programa Nacional de Promoção de Saúde Oral, mais conhecido por cheque-dentista.

Outros assuntos da atualidade, como a crise económica na União Europeia, também foram abordados.
