FDI Annual World Dental Congress 2010 opening session
Salvador da Bahia was full of news for FDI! Elections for board and committees, a nomination of a new Interim Executive Director and new ambitious projects.
Jérôme Estignard is the new IED of FDI, who I would like to specially congratulate. Likewise, I would like to salute the 4 councillors and the 10 committee members that were elected or re-elected at the General Assembly B of the FDI Annual World Dental Congress. To them I send my best wishes for great work within the FDI. Together we can create better and healthier smiles around the world!

O articulado constitucional sobre a Saúde (art. 64º número 1.), estipula que “todos têm direito à protecção da saúde e o dever de a defender e promover”. Deveria a referência à Saúde na Constituição ficar por aqui…
A Constituição, no entanto, tenta uma blindagem ideológica nos dois pontos seguintes, descrevendo primeiro o modelo concreto para a persecução deste direito: através de um serviço nacional de saúde universal e geral e, tendencialmente gratuito; e pela melhoria das condições económicas, sociais, culturais e ambientais que garantam a protecção das pessoas. Detalha posteriormente as incumbências do Estado no sentido de assegurar esse direito, indo ao pormenor de estabelecer políticas de prevenção e tratamento da toxicodependência!

I am anxiously waiting for the match between Portugal and Spain, today.
I don’t even dare asking for 7 goals, but I believe we will find it within ourselves to score enough to go through to the quarter finals!
Update: It was a disappointing match for me… We came home earlier! Congratulations to the Spanish team, they done it better!

Foi atingido um recorde. Mais de 1600 pessoas conseguiram chegar ao fim dos 15 km da 11ª edição da EDP Gás Corrida Festas da Cidade do Porto, disputada no último domingo de manhã. Com muito orgulho, fui uma delas!

In time of FIFA World Cup it’s impossible to me not comment the games, specially the performance of the Portuguese team.
We played yesterday against Ivory Coast (0 – 0). It was the opening match of G group, the so-called group of death, and it wasn’t as I expected, at all! However, as everything in my life I still believe that better can be done, and Portugal will go into their final group game with four points… Inspiration will come and as Cristiano Ronaldo said:
“Goals are like ketchup, you keep on forcing it, then it comes all at once”
Anything is possible!

The Spanish Dental Association, in its General Assembly, marked the Oral Cancer European day. Last 11th June I was in Santiago Compostela with our colleagues from Spain where we approach some of the aspects concerning oral cancer: prevention and treatments.

Last 2 June, in Lisbon, the Presidents of the four Portuguese Health Professional Regulators (Dentists, Physicians, Pharmacists and Nurses) made a joint organization of a Conference dedicated to the subject «Patient safety versus system’s sustainability». The Health Minister was present at the conference opening.
Patient Safety was one of the important issues approached. I stated that one of the prerequisites for «Patient Safety» is the notion of quality at the service of patient safety. There has been a «simplification» of the definition of quality in Health, focused exclusively in the outcomes and neglecting the «structures and processes».
Patient expectations and behaviours are very important aspects that should be taken into account. Healthcare should be centred on the patients and the strengthening of this empowering is a key aspect in a modern health system. Read the rest of this entry »
